News You Can Endow - NYTimes.com
While I think the “foundation model” for newspapers looks good right now, it’s not the best one. The freedom to have op-ed columnists and editorials is an important and very necessary component of news organizatinos as entities, and businesses — especially as opinion becomes an increasingly compelling component of all media.
Moreover, who’s to say that “foundation papers” wouldn’t kowtow to politicans who might be able to interfere with their nonprofit status? Or journalists wouldn’t censor themselves to avoid jeoparding that status?
Finally, where does all this foundation money come from? A cool $5B for the New York Times alone? Who’s going to foot that bill?
