Foursquare Use & Abuse

Is there a right way and a wrong way to use Foursquare?

I think so. I think of Foursquare as being a social connector, in the traditional in-person, “Mike’s a few blocks away eating a burger let’s go meet him and steal some of his fries” way. I confess I also like the badges; yesterday I unlocked “Far and Away” for going above 59th Street — to eat popovers.

That said, there are some places it just doesn’t make sense to check in. Two, principally:

  • Home (unless you’re having people over or want people to come by)
  • Work (unless you’re offering beer)

The airport I can understand. Someone else you know may be flying out at the same time. And last night I checked in at the movies — someone could have been seeing Watchmen at the same time.

If you want to check in everywhere, use Brightkite or just leave Google Latitude running.
